Habit Tracker

A personal tool for building better habits and understanding yourself.

Problem

Most habit apps are either too complex or too generic. People who want to build self-awareness need something simple enough to use daily but meaningful enough to show real patterns in their behavior over time.

Solution

Built a focused habit tracking web app with Next.js and Firebase that lets users log daily habits, track streaks, and reflect on their consistency — designed to be distraction-free and fast to use.

Impact

  • Under 5s

  • Real-time

  • Solo

Approach

  • 1

Used Firebase Firestore for real-time habit data sync across sessions

  • 2

Designed a minimal UI so logging a habit takes under 5 seconds

  • 3

Built streak logic to motivate consistency without gamification overload

  • 4

Deployed on Vercel for instant global availability

Challenges & Solutions

Keeping the UI simple while supporting flexible habit categories

Settled on a flat list structure with color-coded categories, avoiding nested folders or tags that would add friction to daily use.

Persisting user data reliably without a traditional backend

Leveraged Firebase Auth and Firestore rules to handle authentication and per-user data isolation securely without writing a custom API.
